Biography:

Monty Ashliman is a proud husband and father of three children who graduated from Virginia Beach Public Schools.  Being all over the world during his US Navy career, Monty could have chosen numerous places to raise his family, and he chose Virginia Beach.  His leadership experience, dedication to representing those he serves, fiscal responsibility, and passion to be a servant leader makes him the best choice to serve as the next At-Large member of the Virginia Beach School Board.

 

Monty will ensure our Virginia Beach Public Schools are a place for the promotion of academic excellence by our students, where our teachers are proud to be in order to most effectively educate and develop our students, and our parents are confident in their children’s public education.

 

Monty has devoted his life to service to our precious Nation.  He is a recently retired Navy Captain with over 32 years of active-duty service and demonstrated, proven executive and combat leadership.  He is a 1990 graduate of the United States Naval Academy where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.  After graduation, he spent his Navy career within Naval Aviation while flying nearly 3,000 hours in strike-fighter aircraft (F-14 Tomcats and FA-18 Super Hornets) and over 700 aircraft carrier landings.  He was decorated numerous times for personal valor in combat.  He has made world-wide deployments on multiple aircraft carriers in numerous combat theaters.  

 

He has been a resident of Virginia Beach for over 30 years and has a deep-rooted connection to this community.  He also has a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.

 

He served as the Commanding Officer (i.e. CEO) of a strike-fighter squadron responsible for 13 FA-18 Super Hornet aircraft and nearly 300 personnel under his command in the Navy’s Forward Deployed Naval Forces overseas in Japan.  He also served as Commanding Officer (i.e. CEO, City Manager) of a major Navy installation where he was responsible for the safety, security, and well-being of 300 FA-18 Super Hornet and F-35 Lightning aircraft (over half of the Navy’s strike-fighter assets) and nearly 30,000 personnel who live and train onboard the installation.

 

During his career, he was hand-selected to be a TOPGUN instructor at the Navy Fighter Weapons School where he trained and taught at the pinnacle of training and Human Performance within Naval Aviation.  Additionally, he has experience in intercultural relationships having lived overseas twice (Qatar and Japan) as well as worked at NATO’s Headquarters here in Norfolk, VA.

He retired as the Director of Operations (i.e. COO) at Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic where he was responsible for the oversight of Fire and Emergency Services, Port Operations, Air Operations, Security, Safety, Emergency Management, and Emergency Dispatch services for all Navy equities in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
