Noah Moreland Is a born and raised Virginia Beach native whose family has lived here
going back to his grandparents on both sides of his family. Along with his three siblings, was a
VBCPS student all throughout public school, where he attended the Legal Studies Academy at
First Colonial High School and then went on to Graduate from Old Dominion University with a
B.S. in Criminal Justice. Being 26 his experience with the public school system is still fresh, and
he witnessed the change that took place in it from when his older sister attended, to when his
younger sister graduated just 4 years ago.
It is his belief that some of the current issues in the school system stem from a
fundamental lack of respect on the part of the administration towards parents, and by
extension their students and thus wants to reinvigorate and foster a culture of parental and
community involvement back into the school system. Parents should be welcome and
encouraged to be interested in and parts of their students’ educational life.
Having worked in the utility industry for the past few years, Noah is well aware of the
growing opportunities in the field for smart, talented individuals just graduating public school,
but believes we aren’t doing enough to introduce students to these. Because of this, Noah
wants to further promote an agenda of work-force readiness in the school system and believes
VBCPS is not doing enough to prepare its students for life when they graduate. He wants to
show students (And teachers) that a university degree is not mandatory for a successful life in
the work-force.
In recent years Virginia Beach Schools have strayed from encouraging and fostering
academic excellence in their schools. We should actively reward educational achievements and
stimulate students into pursuing that for themselves. He also believes heavily in the fact that as
public officials, we should actually listen to the people we represent, but also hold true to the
values we profess to believe in. When we do not, we risk tainting the trust our constituents
place in us, and should be held accountable for the actions we take.
While he does not have any kids of his own, he is also a youth leader at the church he
attends, so he has regular hands-on experience with the struggles and lives of the kids in our
school system and has first hand knowledge of the way our school system impacts these kids.
Noah is young, but has the energy, drive and will to fight for a public school system his own kids
may one day attend. It is his belief that the school board is in desperate need of a fresh voice,
and believes he can provide that voice.
