On Monday 8 August 2022, The FBI raided the home of former President Donald Trump while he and his family were absent. They did not engage in discussion regarding their concerns, nor did they present him with a subpoena, rather a search warrant was issued to whoever was present. This was well planned to take place while he was away, and they descended upon President Trump’s home with large numbers of armed agents. This is unprecedented, nationally embarrassing, and alarming. This is not Russia or China where police actions directed against political opponents is not unheard of, this is the United States of America, and we don’t do this. No one is above the law, and we must expect that critical national security was at stake to justify this police action against a former president. However, we may not hear anything. The current administration has total control of the white house and both chambers of Congress and they may elect to provide no explanation or merely high-level sound bites. All Americans, regardless of party affiliation, must watch this closely as it unfolds because this may very well indicate the future direction of the nation. 19th-century British politician Lord Acton said it best, “absolute power corrupts absolutely”. However, we must remain positive because our constitution was written to address situations and challenges such as this!
